Description: South Hams SAC was designated in recognition of the greater horseshoe bat population located within South Devon, which makes up a significant proportion of Britain's greater horseshoe bat population. Population numbers within South Devon are a reflection of the favourable habitat that has survived as a result of suitable land management practices, and the greater horseshoe bat uses the wider countryside for the majority of their activities; including commuting, foraging, roosting and mating. Radiotracking studies were carried out to facilitate the identification of strategic flyways and also confirmed that greater horseshoe bats will regularly use interconnected flyways associated with lines of vegetation. Strategic flyways were identified as the most likely link between the key (SAC) roosts and foraging habitats within the contiguous landscape features used by greater horseshoe bats. The flyways were made as 500m wide buffers (250m each side of the flightpath) to offer several pathways and to provide alternative routes to accomodate variance in weather. The flyways tend to be closely associated with the main rivers and sheltered valleys of South Devon. To facilitate effective decision making and in order to evaluate 'favourable conservation status' of the South Devon greater horseshoe bat population, all key aspects associated with maintaining the integrity of the greater horseshoe bat interest (e.g. sustenance zones, strategic flyways etc - refer to http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/142010 for full info) must be considered during the planning process. In urban or 'pinch point' situations, existing strategic flyway habitat is particularly susceptible to development pressures due to the limited routes available for commuting. Refer to South Hams Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for further information about this SAC.
